How many calories are in a pint of ice cream? How many calories are in a bag of potato chips? How much energy is in a cup of coffee? We have all heard time and time again, the answer is “too much.” It’s impossible to answer these questions accurately due to the way we consume calories in our diet.
According to Harvard School of Public Health, in order to lose weight you have to eat less than you burn - or calorie deficit. To get off the diet roller coaster you have to start eating less and less energy. If you eat less calories but eat more of the wrong things you will gain weight. Now we know that people who are on a diet that is high in fat have trouble losing weight. Many of us are concerned with the number of calories we are eating. The first step in figuring out what is going on is to figure out how many calories you are burning. You don’t want to know how many calories you are burning and what you are eating! You want to know how many calories the foods you are eating are burning. For example, if you are eating a cheeseburger, a small salad, and a dessert all at once, it is really easy to figure out how many calories will get burned. The problem is that a small salad has a lot of calories, and that may not be an efficient use of calories.
To understand how much energy is in food we need to know what energy is. You may have heard something like this before, but what is energy? Energy is how much activity you engage in. For example, you are sitting in your kitchen and you are thinking that you don’t have any energy. What you mean is, that you have not done anything except sit there. What you are doing is sitting in your chair, which is a form of energy, but not the same. Better to jump rope though.
